Three-Dozen Workshops for Homeschooling Parents Featured at Ninth Annual Conference and Bookfair in Plano Aug. 6-7

ALLEN, Texas – July 20, 2004 – This year’s Summer Homeschool Conference and Bookfair August 6 and 7 will feature expert speakers conducting three-dozen informative workshops on homeschooling topics for parents who teach their children outside of traditional schools.

The ninth annual Conference, at the Plano Centre in Plano, Texas, is sponsored by the North Texas Home Educators Network (NTHEN) and is expected to attract more than 3,000 homeschooling families from all over north Texas and surrounding states.

Workshops at the conference range from advice for beginning homeschooling parents to specific guidance in areas such as writing, algebra, geography, and history. Among the varied workshop offerings are:

  • Howard Berg, known as the “World’s Fastest Reader,” will show how to accelerate a child’s learning.
  • Stephen Lunsford of Allen, Vice-President of NTHEN, will focus on how beginning families can start their homeschooling successfully and stay on track.
  • Dr. Jerry Johnson of The Criswell College in Dallas will show how families can get their homeschooled students into top colleges.
  • Michael Farris, Founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association, will address the role of fathers in homeschooling.

There are also workshops on topics such as understanding learning styles, occupying younger children while parents teach the older ones, use of literature in learning, parent-taught driver education, preparing and implementing lesson plans, essay writing, and using cooking to teach creative writing.

The workshop speakers are in addition to the Conference’s two keynote speakers: Michael Farris, President of Patrick Henry College and David Barton, Founder of civic grassroots organization WallBuilders. The Homeschool Conference and Bookfair also features more than 125 exhibitors showcasing books, multimedia, and other educational tools.

The conference runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, August 6 and 7. Onsite registration fees are $10 per adult and $5 per child. Additional conference information is available online at www.nthen.org or by calling 214-495-9600.
